BELGRADE In terms of access to information, "Serbia is ahead of the neighboring countries, even above the European average," says Rodoljub Sabic. But the commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection warned on Tuesday that "the situation in the field of personal data protection really gives a cause for concern." "Poor personal data protection cause for concern" On the occasion of Human Rights Day, which is marked on December 10, Sabic said in an interview to Tanjug that 93 percent of the commissioner's interventions for acting upon the request for access to information are successful. Ordinary citizens account for two-thirds of all requests for enforcement of the law on free access to information of public importance, and not journalists or specialized non-governmental organizations, he noted. It is nonsense that, under the law, the Serbian commissioner does not have the power to take misdemeanor proceedings, not to mention to punish someone, he said, adding that the Serbian government has never forced anyone to provide the required information. "Dozens of people were convicted, but thanks to the stubbornness, resolve and principled approach of the journalists and citizens who instituted misdemeanor proceedings as the injured party," Sabic said. When it comes to the implementation of the law on personal data protection, hardly anything has been done, as Serbia has not adopted other important laws in this field - on video surveillance, biometrics, security checks, the commissioner warned.
