BELGRADE The National Organization of Consumers of Serbia (NOPS) says that aflatoxin contamination of milk sold in Serbian stores was "near the upper permitted limit". According to the group's president Goran Papovic, "samples were taken from 17 brands of milk produced by domestic and foreign companies", and the results showed that the milk was "safe" - but that its quality "should be checked more often". Consumer group publishes its own aflatoxin report He explained that the "upper permitted limit" of contamination with the cancerogenic substance was 0.05 milligrams per liter, and that this was "harmonized with EU regulations". "There's no reason for the citizens to fear that our food safety regulations are more lax," Papovic sought to reassure Serbians, and added that "some media reported erroneously that the limit was 0.5 milligrams per liter". This organization also said that it had informed the Ministry of Agriculture of its findings, and that new, separate analyses would be carried out in a month's time. Last week, the ministry said that it had taken 300 milk samples and found them safe. All this activity came after high concentrations of aflatoxin were found in the milk produced by Croatia's Vindija and Dukat dairies. Several regional countries subsequently ntroduced bans on imports of milk from Croatia. (sxc.hu, stock) Beta
