BELGRADE A veteran association has announced that they will hold the Shame Parade in Belgrade on October 6, aimed at raising awareness about the problems they face. The gathering will coincide with the Pride Parade, scheduled for the same day in Belgrade, which has the goal of promoting gay rights. War veterans to gather on same day as gay activists The Alliance of Veterans of War said in a statement published on Tuesday that their parade will be "a peaceful assembly", and called on all veterans who wish to take part in the struggle to ensure their human rights and dignity to join them. "This will not be an attempt to beak up the Belgrade Pride Parade, because all of Serbia's citizens have a right to draw the attention to their problems through peaceful gatherings," the statement said, and added that the veterans will attempt to point to the huge problems that this population - numbering some 500,000 people - is facing. The association added that they wished to highlight "a lack of care and criminal activities perpetrated on behalf of the veterans, and within the sector for protection of veterans and disabled persons". "We wish to send out a message of tolerance and understanding from this gathering, for the public in Serbia to see that these are normal people, their neighbors, friends, brothers and fathers, who had answered the call to defend their homeland," said the statement.
