Up to 60 liters of rain per square meter fell in the Western Backa District in northern Serbia yesterday. Heavy rain also caused serious problems in neighboring Croatia, and the Republic of Srpska (RS). Heavy rain, floods in W. Balkans Water threatens many households in the Sombor District and villages of Ridjica and Kljajicevo, where 40 homes have been flooded. The situation is critical in many streets in the town of Sombor, where the water is getting into houses. The Zapadna (Western) Backa Water Management Company, firefighters and citizens are fighting the rising water levels, said reports. According to information from the weather stations, 200 liters of rain per square meter fell in Sombor in May – three times the average amount. Heavy rainfall caused big problems in Croatia as well. People are being evacuated from their homes in some villages in the Slavonia and Baranja regions in the east of that country. A levee has been built around the most critical part of the Zagreb-Belgrade highway. There are concerns that the situation could deteriorate, prompting those engaged in civil defense to go on stand-by. After several days of heavy rainfall, a flooding emergency has also been declared in Derventa in RS. (Beta, file)
