The cumulative losses of Serbian public companies reached EUR 4bn at the end of 2008, with Serbian Railways (ZS) accounting for one-fourth of that figure. However, this did not stop the company’s administration from giving themselves very high wages, which are seven times higher than the average paycheck received by the company’s workers. B92 TV looks at high wages in Serbian Railways B92 TV investigative program Reakcija (Reaction) will be looking into where the money goes, originally set aside to make the company, and all other public companies, work in the interest of the citizens, rather than political parties and individuals. One example is the former CEO who was paid by the board of directors as if he was a member of the board. “The motive is probably, I don’t know, to get the wage closer to that of the CEOs of other public companies. It’s not his fault that Serbian Railways is working poorly and making him the only CEO named by a party, that is being left out,” former president of the board of directors, Pavle Pavlovic, said. Added salaries are secured through funds for representation and daily fees. Union leaders also spend a lot of money on daily expenses. Workers say that this is one reason why some union leaders are more loyal to the employers, than the workers. At the same time, the number of daily expenses they incur is often more than the number of working days they had to travel in. A lot of money is being spent on apartments as well, which are often given out outside of the rankings, especially when the management is in question. “Hundreds of apartments have been given out, hundreds! It is not moral,” former minister Velimir Ilic said. The B92 program will show new documents that uncover where millions of euros are being spent without any system of control in place, instead of being invested into the railroads and trains.
