Spain won their first European basketball crown last night, cruising to a 85-63 triumph over Serbia in last night’s final in Warsaw. It was sweet revenge for the reigning world champions, who went down to a shock defeat to Duda Ivkovic’s young guns in their first match of the tournament. Plucky Serbs succumb to Spanish masterclass The Spanish dominated from start to finish, with Serbia looking rather jaded after the epic semi-final victory over Slovenia on Saturday night. With the hero of that match, Milos Teodosic, unable to reproduce his magic of the previous evening, it was always going to be an uphill battle against the Spanish team of stars headed by the Gasol brothers. Halfway into the first quarter the Spanish were already 20-7 up, hitting 3-pointers with unerring accuracy, though Uros Tripkovic and Novica Velickovic were doing their best to keep Serbia in touch. Things briefly looked up for Serbia early in the second quarter when the Spanish lead was cut to eight, but it proved a false dawn, as the Spanish stamped their authority on the match, establishing a 52-29 lead by halftime. Though Spain took their foot off the pedal somewhat in the third quarter, Serbia were still unable to make any significant inroads into their lead, and, indeed, at one point in the second half, trailed 77-48. Spain’s victory, following equally comfortable wins in the quarter and sem-finals against France and Greece, gave them their first European title, having lost in six previous finals. For Serbia, although outclassed on the night, there are still great grounds for optimism that the team, with the youngest average age of all the teams competing at this year’s championship, could restore Serbian basketball to the golden days of the Eighties and Nineties.
