The Kosovo village of Susica, some three kilometers from the Serb enclave of Gracanica, has Serbs and ethnic Albanians living together in peace. Despite the war and troubles in Kosovo, 110 Serb and 50 Albanian families say they live in the village as good neighbors. Kosovo village struggles, keeps ethnic harmony Although the 1999 war ago "broke off all communication between them", our reporter says, ten years on, the problems they share have forced the two communities to talk again. "We realized, both Serbs and Albanians, that we must work together to solve the village's problems in order to live better and enable our offspring to live in better conditions than those before, to solve communal and everyday problems and leave politics aside," Dejan Jeftic, introduced as the Serb representative of the village, says. Unemployment, drinking water shortage, bad roads – are some of those problems. Ethnic Albanians say that Serbs in Susica "are not a problem" for them, and instead wish to see more assistance for both communities from the Kosovo Albanian institutions. "I think that inter-ethnic relations in Susica are the best in all of Kosovo," says Agim Krasnici, a local Albanian. "But in my opinion, this is not sufficiently taken into account, and it looks to me as if they won't invest here out of spite, because we live together without any problems in Susica." Local Serbs and Albanians are mostly farmers, who freely go into their fields to work them and help each other out in high season. Instead of moving out of their homes as is the case elsewhere in the province, Susica residents say that no Serb family has left in the past ten years, and that Serbs are even building new houses. Both communities believe that "all troubling events must be left behind", and wish "a better future" for the village and their children.
