The 90th anniversary of the breakthrough at the WW1 Salonika Front was marked on Saturday in Thessaloniki, Greece. The Serbian delegation was headed by Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac. Salonika Front anniversary marked The ceremonies, to be continued in Policastro on Sunday, were also attended by 30 top graduates of the Military Academy in Belgrade, as well as by senior officials and diplomats of Greece, France, Great Britain, Russia and Italy. Sutanovac laid down wreaths at the Serbian Military Cemetery at Zeytinlik, close to Thessaloniki, which includes the graves of French, Greek, English, Italian and Russian troops, Tanjug reports. The Zeytinlik military cemetery complex is situated on the site of the 1916 main field hospital of the Serbian Army. After breaching the Salonika Front in 1918, the Serbian Army and its allies contributed to the defeat of the Central Axis: Austro - Hungary, Germany and Bulgaria. The Salonika Front, also known as the Macedonian Front, opened in the Balkans by the Allies against the Central Axis from 1915-1918, was close to 600 km long, and was named after the main base - Thessaloniki. By 1917, Allied troops fighting in this region were made up of the French, Serbs, British, Greeks, Italians and Russia, while the Central Axis included Germany, Bulgaria and Austria- Hungary.
