A construction worker was killed in western Serbia yesterday when a landslide buried him and two others. The workers were building a road on the Rovni embankment dam near Valjevo, which is currently under construction. Dam site landslide kills one Milan Plavsic, 33, was pronounced dead after his body was recovered, while Nikola Maksimovic, 27, and Darko Petakovic, 24, suffered minor injuries. Although the accident occurred at around 14:00 CET, Valjevo's MUP firefighters were called in at 15:45. In the meantime, workers from a private contractor building the road attempted to dig the victims up themselves. Police and court investigators were at the scene, while an on-duty judge with Valjevo's Municipal Court ordered a post mortem to be performed on Plavsic. The dam, with a 51.3 million cubic meters capacity, under construction for a number of years, has drawn criticism as being potentially unsafe for Valjevo, a town of some 100,000 residents, lying 15 km downstream from the structure projected to be made of compacted earth.
