Flu-stricken Novak Djokovic retired from his Davis Cup match Sunday. Serbia's top tennis player and winner of this year's Australia Open had built up a two-set lead and was 3-0 up in the third in his match against Nikolai Davydenko, despite being way below his best and often struggling for breath after suffering from the 'flu symptoms in the last few days, Reuters said. Djokovic was taken to a local hospital suffering from exhaustion, a Serbian team spokesman said. The home team had led 2-0 after sweeping both of their singles matches on Friday but Djokovic kept alive Serbia's hopes when he teamed up with Nenad Zimonjic to win Saturday's doubles. Russia has progressed to the quarter-finals, for a series of matches with the Czech Republic. But it wasn’t all doom and gloom today, as Djokovic was given a "Djokovka" vodka during a news conference after the match. Dmitry Grantzov, a journalist form Moscow daily Argumenti i Fakti, went up to Djokovic to present him with a bottle of vodka, complete with the 20-year-old's image and apparently named after him. "We do not wish to watch such sad matches in the future, so I hope this present will cheer you up. You are the pride of the Serbian nation, but you are also the pride of the Slavic nation," Gantzov explained his gesture. He was inspired by Djokovic's news conference after yesterday's doubles victory, when the Serbian tennis star jokingly told reporters in Moscow he was curing his flu symptoms by taking some Serbian plum brandy, known as slivovitz in English. "It's a kind of brandy. Very strong alcohol. We usually take it when something hurts, and it goes away immediately… a bit like your vodka. People from the West will not understand that," Djokovic confided to his Russian hosts. Novak Djokovic during his match against Nikolai Davydenko (Beta)
