Russia raced into a 2-0 lead against Serbia on day 1 of their Davis Cup first round clash in Moscow. Serbia, without the services of world no.3 Novak Djokovic and Serbian no.2 Janko Tipsarevic who both had to miss out after contracting stomach viruses, were always going to face an uphill struggle against last year’s runners-up. Davis Cup: Russia cruising against understrength Serbia In yesterday’s opening rubber, Nenad Zimonjic—more known for his doubles exploits—took on world no.8 Mikhail Youzhny, ranked 681 places above him. However, the experienced Zimonjic was far from overawed as he took the first set magnificently, 6-2, much to the dismay of the raucous home support, who had expected an easy afternoon’s work for their man. Sadly though, for the visitors, this was as good as it got, and indeed, is likely to be the only time Serbia lead in this match, as Youzhny’s superior class told, as he notched up the next three sets in under two hours for a final score of 2:6, 6:3, 6:2, 6:4. Next up were Serbian world no.114 Viktor Troicki and world no.4 Nikolay Davidenko for Russia. After the Russian swept to the first set 6:1, most spectators were expecting an early finish, as the Serbian seemed completely unable to cope with Davidenko’s ground shots and speed around the court, while himself racking up a string of unforced errors. So, when Troicki cruised to the second set 6:1, no-one was more surprised than the players themselves, as the Serbian suddenly started looking like a Top 10 player. Davidenko retaliated taking the third set 6:3, but the see-saw nature of the match continued as again Troicki responded to take set four 6:1, to take him into the first five-setter of his career. And, when he broke Davidenko in the first game of the decider, suddenly the unthinkable looked possible. However, the Russian proved that he was not the world no.4 by accident, as he rediscovered his form of the first set to take match ultimately 6:1, 1:6, 6:3, 1:6, 6:2, leaving Russia requiring only one win from the remaining three rubbers.
