The Environment Ministry has announced a “Million Trees for Serbia” project for 2008. Deputy Environment Minister Dusan Pajkic said that trees would be planted “everywhere possible,” but especially near industrial zones, canals and roads. Ministry to launch "Million Trees for Serbia" campaign He said that the Institute for Forestry and Environmental Protection and the Republic Institute for Forestry would put together a project for action and continued cooperation. The ministry has already invested RSD 46.5mn (about EUR 581,000) in restoring forests since the 2007 summer fires. Some 2200 trees have been planted in Pancevo’s industrial zone, which the ministry set RSD 3.3mn (about EUR 41,000) aside for. The trees were planted over an area of 3.5 hectares, giving the city 90 tons of extra oxygen per year. The 2008 project will be carried out by the Agriculture Ministry’s Forestry Department, together with the "Srbija Sume" and "Vojvodina Sume" public companies.
