President Boris Tadic and Prime Minister Vojislav Kostunica wished a happy New Year to the citizens of Serbia. Tadic voiced his hopes that 2008 will be "happier than 2007." President, prime minister send New Year greetings “I wish health, success and happiness for the Serbian citizens, for our families, and our children. I wish for us to have a lot of work to do and to work more than we did last year,” Tadic said. The president added that Serbia expects great challenges in the next year and that “Serbia must gather around a common goal – maintaining the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the country and its European integration.” “This will enable stable economic and industrial progress for Serbia,” Tadic said in the New Year’s greetings issued by his press office. Kostunica also sent his greetings today, saying that 2008 will be the "year of great expectations and temptations, which means the year in which Serbia should show all its strength." In his New Year's message, Kostunica said that Serbia would continue to fight "for Kosovo-Metohija in 2008, make efforts to strengthen the economy and continue its fight against crime and corruption. Serbia's state institutions must show the biggest responsibility and demonstrate full state unity, because this is the only way forward." "We are facing the old, centuries-long challenge, of big forces trying to take away our territory. Serbia today has allies, primarily Russia, which in keeping with the UN Charter at the United Nations has defended Serbia's right that the principle of observation of sovereignty and territorial integrity must apply on its and all other states in the world," Kostunica's message reads. "This is why Kosovo Serbs must know that a puppet creation which would be unilaterally declared would never exist for Serbia and that Serbs in the province will always be full-fledged and equal citizens of Serbia," Kostunica said. The government is working on making a strategic agreement with Russia on long-term cooperation in the energy sector, the prime minister said, which would ensure strong development of Serbian economy and a stable supply of gas and oil in the next decades. "All our citizens must live better and must be able to provide a normal and dignified life to their families," Kostunica said and wished that all citizens have a "peaceful, prosperous and happy new year." Parliament Speaker Oliver Dulic and a number of other state officials also sent their New Year messages today. B92 would like to take the opportunity and wish all our readers in the country and all over the world a happy new year.
