World AIDS Day will be celebrated in Belgrade today under the slogan, “Take Responsibility”. According to figures from the Public Health Institute, there are currently 1196 people in Serbia living with the HIV virus, while during 2007, there have been 75 new cases, 29 people have contracted AIDS, and 12 have died of the disease. In Serbia, between 1985 and November 2007, 2178 people have been registered as HIV positive, of whom 1381 (63 percent) have caught AIDS, with 917 dying. Serbia marks World AIDS Day The data indicates that 77 percent of registered cases of HIV have been in Belgrade. The Institute’s figures suggest that the number of cases has fallen sharply since 1999. The number of men infected with or who have died of AIDS is three times higher than that of women, indicating that men are more exposed to the virus, in line with statistics for Europe and the rest of the world. According to the latest, modified forecasts from the World Health Organization and UNAIDS, there are currently 33.2 million HIV sufferers worldwide (2.5 million children under the age of 15), including 2.5 million new cases this year. It is estimated that 2.1 million people have died of AIDS in 2007, of whom 333,000 children under the age of 15. These estimates indicate that every day 6800 people contract the HIV virus, while AIDS has claims the lives of 5700 people, mainly as a result of inadequate access to medication and facilities for HIV treatment. Since 1981, when it was first acknowledged, AIDS has killed more than 30 million people, making HIV/AIDS the most destructive epidemic since records began. The Red Cross has announced that, in conjunction with the Health Ministry and the National HIV Office, World AIDS Day will be marked with a series of educational and promotional activities. Citizens, particularly youngsters, will be handed promotional material – 100,000 brochures, 200,000 pocket calendars, 10,000 leaflets and 5000 posters. This year, for the third time, a competition for artistic and literary works is being held on the theme of HIV/AIDS. The most successful entrants will win a ten-day visit to the Red Cross’s resort in Baosic next summer, according to a statement. Street festivities and talks will be organized in over 100 municipalities throughout Serbia, while the Red Cross in Gornji Milanovac and Kragujevac will hold a party for young people. Presentations and sketches on the subject of HIV/AIDS will be staged by Red Cross organizations in Zvezdara, Rakovica, Indjija and Ruma, together with thematic presentations in other municipalities, while free and anonymous HIV testing will be carried out over the next week at Jagodina Health Center, the local Red Cross has announced. Educational and promotional activities in schools will be organized in over 100 municipalities, while an educational film, “Jump” will be shown in a number of locations. The theme of the film, a joint production between the Serbian and Uzice Red Cross, is psycho-active substance abuse.
