The international conference on environment for Europe drew to a close in Belgrade today. It was concluded that all countries should step up work on achieving progress in the area of environmental protection, through common projects, and through the implementation of international conventions and agreements relating to this area, Environment Minister Sasa Dragin said on Friday. Environment for Europe conference ends Speaking at the closing news conference, the minister expressed satisfaction that all the conference participants had supported and adopted Belgrade's initiative on the promotion of regional cooperation in resolving matters of climate change and the creation of a sub-regional center for monitoring climate change in Belgrade. The center will begin work soon after the end of the conference, under the control of the Republic’s Department of Hydrometeorology. Parameters for climate change from the entire region will be compiled in the center, Dragin specified. Representatives of the Geneva Institute for monitoring climate change and the Environment Ministry signed a cooperation agreement today which should also contribute to the center's development. It is vital that the Environment for Europe process should successfully continue and that natural goods should be protected and promoted for future generations, Dragin said. United Nations (UN) Economic Commission for Europe’s Director of the Environment and Human Settlement Division Kai Barlund, pointed out that the ministerial declaration, adopted today, sent a strong message to countries that they should meet the commitments undertaken in international agreements in the area of environmental protection. Barlund pointed out the need to construct strong institutions in the area of environmental protection, which are important for the implementation of policy in an area where Serbia has achieved good results. The Environment for Europe conference was attended by around 2,500 participants from over 50 countries, and covered by around 200 reporters from home and abroad.

Speaking at the closing news conference, the minister expressed satisfaction that all the conference participants had supported and adopted Belgrade's initiative on the promotion of regional cooperation in resolving matters of climate change and the creation of a sub-regional center for monitoring climate change in Belgrade.

The center will begin work soon after the end of the conference, under the control of the Republic’s Department of Hydrometeorology. Parameters for climate change from the entire region will be compiled in the center, Dragin specified.

Representatives of the Geneva Institute for monitoring climate change and the Environment Ministry signed a cooperation agreement today which should also contribute to the center's development.
