Serbia reached the Davis Cup world group Sunday after Novak Djokovic beat Chris Guccione in playoffs. Guccione, ranked a lowly 94th in the world, was pitched into the most intimidating of Cup cauldrons as a last-minute replacement for an ailing Lleyton Hewitt, who was struck down with gastroenteritis and unable to play Djokovic in the much-anticipated first reverse singles rubber. Davis Cup: Serbia reaches world group Djokovic's 6-3 7-6 7-6 win secured Serbia a spot in next year's World Group for the first time. Australia as the second most successful nation in Davis Cup history with 28 titles is now being relegated to the Asia-Oceania zone for the first time since 1996. The third-ranked Djokovic, who lost the U.S. Open final to Roger Federer earlier this month, struggled in the second set against Guccione before clinching the tiebreaker. Djokovic had a match point at 5-4 in the third set, but Guccione saved it with an ace. The Australian then wasted a 5-2 lead in the tiebreaker, with Djokovic hitting a perfect lob for a 5-5 tie. Guccione hit a backhand wide on Djokovic's match point, earning the Serb a standing ovation from some 20,000 home fans in the packed Belgrade Arena. "This is the best crowd I have ever played for," Djokovic said. "Finally, after so many years we have managed to get into the World Group." In the opening singles on Friday, Djokovic beat Peter Luczak in straight sets while Hewitt defeated Janko Tipsarevic in five.
