Defense of Kosovo Six begins in August

The defense for the six former political, military and police officials from Serbia, including  Milan Milutinović, Nikola Šainović, Dragoljub Ojdanić, Nebojša Pavković, Vladimir Lazarević and Sreten Lukić, is expected to rest its case by March 2008.

Defense counsels has been given 240 hours to examine their witnesses in chief, while the prosecution will be given the same amount of time for the cross-examination.

The counsels for the six accused can decide amongst themselves how to divide up the allotted time. They indicated they intended to call a total of 242 witnesses.

The defense case will begin with the opening statement by the defense team for the first accused, Milan Milutinović. His defense intends to call only three witnesses, whose examination should not take longer than two weeks.

All the accused except Milan Milutinović are on the witness lists submitted by the Kosovo Six defense counsel.

Despite Judge Ian Bonomy’s suggestion that the evidence of the accused will “have greater weight” if given at the beginning of the case, rather than after all the other witnesses have been heard and all the evidence called, General Ojdanić’s defense counsel indicated that the general’s testimony was planned for the end of the defense case.

The other defense counsels did not reveal their intentions regarding this matter.
