BELGRADE Hague Prosecutor Geoffrey Nice says the Tribunal has had a positive impact on preventing fresh conflicts. At a conference themed “Legacy of Slobodan Milosevic’s trial” held in Belgrade Saturday, Geoffrey Nice said he couldn’t predict how this trial might affect the reconciliation process in the Balkans, stating that the evidence garnered and presented during the trial would surely "serve as a barrier to all convictions and ideas that might provoke new conflicts." "Legacy of Milosevic's trial" Nice cited the lack of time for the judges and other Hague officials to gain sufficient experience and get acquainted with the background of SFRY’s breakdown as a crucial problem of the Hague Tribunal. “What has been revealed so far during Hague’s trials has an immense value in the long run. It has been proven that horrendous things occurred in the Balkans in the 1990s,” Nice said. “The international community has to use the vast experience gained through the trials in the upcoming cases so as to approach defendants without bias,” the Hague Prosecutor suggested. He said that the trial of former Yugoslav president Slobodan Milosevic should be a good lesson to all politicians that chose to follow his example.
