Albanian Deputy Prime Minister Ilir Meta is on his way to Central America to lobby for more recognitions of Kosovo’s unilaterally proclaimed independence. He will be headed to Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras in hopes of convincing these countries to recognize Kosovo as an independent state, said reports. Albania lobbying for Kosovo recognitions Kosovo's ethnic Albanians made the unilateral proclamation in early 2008, but it has been rejected by Belgrade. Meta's trip is preparation for the upcoming UN General Assembly meeting at which a debate would be held on the resolution for Kosovo that was submitted to the General Assembly by Serbia after the decision of the International Court of Justice that Kosovo’s UDI itself did not violate international law. According to Albanian news agency ATA, President Bamir Topi met with officials of the Communist Party in China on Monday and called on Beijing to join the campaign for getting new recognitions for Kosovo. “As a permanent member of the Security Council, China would be able to play a constructive role in the future,” Topi said. Since the ICJ decision was given, Tirana has been in constant contact with diplomats from the European Union and U.S. and has been trying to secure new recognitions of Kosovo as an independent state, said reports.
