The Republic of Srpska (RS) and the city of Banja Luka have been ordered to pay almost EUR 33mn for the wartime destruction of 16 mosques. The money will go to the Islamic Community of Bosnia-Herzegovina, a Banja Luka court has ruled on Friday. RS ordered to pay for damage to mosques But the RS has announced it would appeal the ruling, deeming it illegal. Most of the compensation money relates to Ferhadija and Arnaudija mosques in Banja Luka, which were cultural and historic monuments. A lawyer for the Islamic Community said that the fact the RS has for the first time taken responsibility for the destruction of the mosques in Banja Luka was more important than the money, and that he hoped the Bosnian Serb entity would not appeal the decision. But officials in Banja Luka said they would appeal within the next month, and cited numerous irregularities in the first degree procedure, "from the fact the lawsuit was not filed within the legal five-year deadline, to the obviously biased judge". Since the law says that all pre-2001 compensation claims become public debt in the RS, the Islamic Community is saying that they are not opposed to the sum being marked as internal debt, and paid in bonds over the next 20 years.
