Slovenian Prime Minister Borut Pahor said that it is necessary for the Slovenian parliament to ratify the protocol for Croatia and Albania joining NATO. Pahor said on Monday that if Slovenia does not ratify the protocol, it would be in a dangerous foreign policy position, because the ratification is key to maintaining credibility and strengthening Slovenian foreign and security policies. Pahor also said that the opposition party, led by former prime minister Janez Jansa, is blackmailing the political majority that now has no choice but to confirm the final budget balance for 2007, and stop Jansa’s party from further obstructing the work of the parliament. Even tough Croatia has reacted strongly to the postponement of the ratification, NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer also reacted to the problem, denying Jansa’s claim that no one internationally has even noticed the problems within the Slovenian parliament. “The problems with the ratification of Croatia’s entrance into NATO has not been noticed by anyone abroad, because nothing has happened, there was no voting, nor was anyone saying that the ratification would not be possible,” Jansa had said. He added that not only did he not notice that anyone was worried about the ratification generally, but that no one in Croatia was causing commotion over it either.
