Slovenian and Croatian Presidents Danilo Turk and Stjepan Mesic have called on their respective governments to resume talks. They say that their governments should resolve open issues through dialogue between the two countries. Turk, Mesic look to defuse tension The two heads of state met at Otocec Palace not far from the countries’ common border, for an informal meeting to mark the fifteenth anniversary of the creation of the Slovenian-Croatian Friendship Society. Relations between the countries “must be treated responsibly and with a feeling of mutual respect. That applies to both sides,” said Turk. The Slovenian president added that “sadly, over the last few days, we’ve heard certain expressions that are not good, such as breaking off relations, a danger of catastrophe and those sorts of expressions that do not enter into our dialogue,” stressing that dialogue was the only way to treat open issues, and, furthermore, respect their specific nature. Issue like the Croatian protected ecological-fishing region (ZERP) “aren’t primarily bilateral matters, but rather concern the EU and should be resolved in Brussels,” he explained. Turk said that he and Mesic welcomed an initiative by European Enlargement Commissioner Olli Rehn that “leads to a meeting of all countries concerned and the European Commission,” that could help in reaching a solution. The Slovenian president added that bilateral issues should also be addressed, such as border disputes, the Krsko nuclear power station and the status of the former Ljubljana Bank. He said that he and the Croatian president had invested significant efforts into these matters. Mesic expressed his belief that it was possible to settle these open questions and moreover stressed that “we mustn’t act against each other rashly, but rather consider all open questions with arguments and find the best solutions.”
