About a hundred Bulgarian millionaires are under investigation on suspicion of illegally acquiring property . The Commission for Establishing of Property Acquired through Criminal Activity will investigate 98 cases for a total worth of 88 531 233 levs (1 euro = 1.95 levs). Bulgaria: 100 millionaires under investigation The commission asked for more powers and alleviation of procedures for confiscating property in favor of the state. Currently property may be forfeited only under a court sentence in effect. Although the Bulgarian legislation was created in cooperation with Ireland, it is not that clear-cut and does not allow forfeiture of illegally acquired property in favor of the state, the commission chair, Stoyan Kushlev said at a roundtable in Sofia. There are forty cases of illegally acquired property brought to court for a total of 24,503, 458 levs. So far only seven of the suits resulted in a guilty verdict. A major difference between the Bulgarian and Irish legislation is that in Bulgaria investigation is launched for cases involving sums over 60 ,000 levs (about 31,000 euro), while in Ireland the threshold is 13,000 euro and in England – 5,000 pounds, Kushlev said. As if Bulgaria were richer than these countries and the sum could be so much higher, he commented. Stoyan Kushlev intends to investigate Gypsy barons who live on welfare in private palaces.
