A former Yugoslav defense chief wanted in Croatia on war crimes charges has spoken to that country's state television. General Veljko Kadijevic told HRT reporters that the Yugoslav People's Army (JNA) did not stage aggression against Croatia. This is why I am the arch-traitor to the Serb people, while in Croatia I am the epitome of evil and a war criminal," Kadijevic said in Moscow, where he now resides. Croatia alleges that the JNA behavior in the 1991-1992 war in that former Yugoslav republic is tantamount to aggression against a sovereign nation and wants Kadijevic, then the defense minister, to stand trial charged with war crimes. HRT aired only parts of the interview, the first the former general granted the Croatian media after the war. Josip Saric, who interviewed Kadijevic, said it was difficult to make contact with the general, due to the fact his name is also on an Interpol arrest warrant. "The Russians don't extradite, but they do arrest persons Interpol is after. Therefore people around Kadijevic were very careful […] it took a month to arrange the meeting," Saric said, and added it took place in a building in downtown Moscow. The whole interview will be broadcast at a later date, Zagreb daily Jutarnji List said in its report.
