Member of protest-organizing group suspected of injuring cop

The case concerns a protest

organized by the initiative in front of the city hall in Belgrade on Monday - one in a series demanding the resignations of top city officials, including the mayor.

According to his lawyer, Simonovic is suspected of lightly injuring a police officer. Dragas also said that "the procedure continues" as the prosecutor is expected to decide whether to procede with the case againt his client.

The lawyer also commented on the video footage posted online where Simonovic is heard saying that "they (protesters) broke the cop's nose." According to Dragas, "these words have been taken out of context" as Simonovic was "merely relaying the words of DSS councilor Nebojsa Bakarec."

In the wake of the protest on Monday, Interior Minister Nebojsa Stefanovic announced criminal and misdemeanor complaints "for an attack on Belgrade Mayor Sinisa Mali, city councilors, and members of the police."

Representatives of the initiative that organized the protest "deny that anyone was attacked," Beta agency reported on Tuesday.
