UNESCO board recommends allowing Kosovo to join

UNESCO's Executive Board has made a decision behind closed doors on Wednesday to recommend that Kosovo be admitted to that organization.

UNESCO board recommends allowing Kosovo to join

Kosovo's Foreign Minister Hashim Thaci said on Twitter that 27 countries voted in favor, 14 were opposed, and 14 abstained.

Even though the discussion on Pristina's bid, submitted by Albania, went behind closed doors today, a statement and "audio recordings" from that part of the session are expected to be published, according to reports.

RTS said that Russia and Cuba, who are opposed to Kosovo's membership, asked for the session to be postponed, but the Executive Board's director rejected this saying the initiative was "late." Cuba's representative then asked for a break in the meeting, saying that procedures had been violated.

RTS also reported that Kosovo was represented without any symbols, and that Thaci entered the room where the meeting was held, but then quickly left.

Among the country's opposed to passing the recommendation were Russia, China, Cuba, Brazil, Spain, and Argentina, while the supporters of Albania's proposal included Austria, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Slovenia, Britain, Sweden, the United Arab Emirates, and the U.S.

Serbia's state, scientific, and Church officials and leaders agree that Pristina's membership in UNESCO is unacceptable, while a petition to this effect has been signed by more than 100,00 people in a short period of time.

Earlier in the day, President Tomislav Nikolic said today's decision of the Executive Board "will certainly not be good for Serbia," and that the country wants the topic to be postponed for 2017 and discussed as part of Kosovo negotiations in Brussels.

Foreign Minister Ivica Dacic said that regardless of today's decision, Serbia will never accept to have its cultural heritage in Kosovo and Metohija taken away, or renamed.
