EC report on Serbia to be "essentially positive"

When it comes to Serbia, the tone of the whole document is in principle positive, and the European Commission pointed out a positive impression related to the introduction of market laws to the Serbian economy, the measures adopted to reduce the budget deficit, and the holding of the Pride Parade.

Although the European Commission's report will not contain a demand for Serbia to join the sanctions against Russia the conclusions will include a statement saying that the country has not fully aligned its foreign policy with the EU, with the expectation that it will gradually do so by the time it formally joins the organization.

In addition, Serbia will get a negative assessment regarding the weakening of the freedom and independence of the media and the strengthening of the tendency of self-censorship, in combination with an undesirable influence on editorial policy, as well as the lack of independence and impartiality in the operation of the judiciary.

When it comes to the opening of the first chapter in the process of Serbia's accession to the EU the report will not contain any specific recommendation of the Commission as to when that might happen. However, it is estimated that it will not take place before January 2015.
