BELGRADE Serbia will probably have to wait a little longer to get a date for the beginning of the EU accession talks because of the Kosovo issue. This is according to United Serbia (JS) leader Dragan Markovic. Serbia likely to “wait little longer” for EU talks date “The EU keeps asking new things from Serbia. Serbia’s top state officials will hardly accept what (EU High Representative) Catherine Ashton is asking,” he said at the JS Main Board meeting in Belgrade on Saturday. “Maybe we will have to wait a little bit longer for the date but we have lived so far without the EU,” Markovic added. He noted that this did not mean that Serbia should give up on the EU integration but he pointed out that it should not accept the EU’s requests that would cost the country a part of the territory – Kosovo. “I am sure that the top state officials will not agree to anything that violates Serbia’s Constitution and they have our full support. Serbs in Kosovo and Metohija cannot be an NGO,” Markovic underscored, commenting on Belgrade’s request to form a community of Serb municipalities in Kosovo that would have executive powers. The JS leader said he did not expect early elections but that his party would participate in the elections in the same coalition with the Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and the Party of United Pensioners of Serbia (PUPS) should they be called.
