The government Economy and Finance Committee approved a bill on restitution of property taken from owners by the communist Yugoslav authorities after WW2. It concerns return of nationalized property and compensation, which will, according to Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic, remedy a historic injustice without causing a new one, in line with Serbia's property and financial resources. Govt. committee approves bill on restitution Presenting the bill which will undergo a public hearing starting today until September 2, Djelic specified the document regulated the conditions, manner and procedure for the return of property nationalized after March 9, 1945 from physical and some legal persons, or the compensation for such property. "In drafting the bill we were guided by three key principles - remedy the injustice done to many families for ideological reasons, not cause new injustices and harmonize the bill with the available state funds so that it can be implemented without jeopardizing the country's financial stability," Djelic said. He stressed the priority is given to compensation in kind, and that around EUR 2 billion have already been earmarked for payments over the next 20 years. Djelic expects the bill will be adopted in September in regular parliamentary procedure. "This is one of the important conditions of Serbia's EU accession and we consulted numerous legal and economic experts in order to satisfy around 150,000 interested citizens, who have two years to file motions," he explained.
