Slovakia's Miroslav Lajcak was on Tuesday appointed head of the European External Action Service (EEAS) for Russia, Eastern Neighborhood and the W. Balkans. The former Slovak FM previously served as his country's ambassador to Serbia and also as high representative of the international community in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Lajcak in charge of EU's W. Balkans diplomacy The Slovak Foreign Ministry welcomed the decision made by High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton, the Slovakian news agency TASR said Tuesday. "We believe that the appointment represents an acknowledgement of the candidate's personal qualities, as well as a confirmation of the Slovakian diplomacy and its role in eastern and southeastern Europe and in the development of cooperation and building of relations between the EU and these countries," the Slovak Foreign ministry said in a statement.
