The situation regarding the freedom of the media in the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) participating states is not satisfactory. This is according to OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media Dunja Mijatovic, who spoke in Vienna on Thursday. OSCE worried about freedom of media While presenting her first regular report since her appointment, she stressed that what has been achieved since 1975 is by all means not small, on a global scale it is even exceptional, adding that there are yet plenty of things to be done. The main task of Mijatovic's office is, as she explained, to support the governments and the civil society. Our role is to remind the countries of their media-freedom obligations, she pointed out. The main priority will be monitoring and early warning in cases of possible violations of the freedom of the media, as well as fostering pluralism. The report lists 25 countries as examples of various degrees of media freedom within OSCE. As far as Serbia is concerned, the OSCE report particularly condemns the brutal attack of Teofil Pancic on July 26, a journalist known for his critical stance against nationalism and sports hooliganism. Mijatovic welcomed the decision by the Serbian government to make the solving of this case, as well as the general protection of journalists and media in Serbia, a priority. In her report, Mijatovic said that she is pleased to learn that on 22 June, the Constitutional Court of Serbia unanimously rejected several amendments to the Public Information Act adopted on 31 August 2009 in a fast-track procedure. Mijatovic said that her office stands ready to assist the Serbian government in reforming the Public Information Act in line with international standards and OSCE commitments.
