Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic will be on a working visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg today. Djelic will be holding bilateral meetings with EP officials, to whom he will present Serbia’s progress in its European integration process and talk about the possibility to increase the speed of further steps towards EU membership. Deputy PM in visit to European Parliament EU delegation chief in Serbia Vincent Degert said that the EU Ministerial Council’s decision to begin the process of ratifying the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) with Serbia was a significant step for Serbia’s EU integration. “It is a very important step for Serbia on the road toward the European Union. It is at the same time a very important call to continue with the reform process, including reforms in the health system, in order to reach the demands and standards of the EU,” Degert said. One of the pillars of the European Union is agriculture, which has a 40 percent participation in the EU budget, and agricultural producers in candidate countries are given the most trade possibilities. “The first effect is the liberalization of the trade of agricultural products in which segment Serbia is in a constant and continuous surplus. The second key aspect is harmonizing domestic laws with the laws of the EU. The third is the adoption of veterinary and sanitary standards of the EU in order to enable the export of products to the EU market,” the Deputy Director of the Office for European Integration, Srdjan Majstorovic, said. “The fourth is to build a recognizable and predictable atmosphere that would result in attracting investments in the agricultural sector. The fifth is to continue improving administrative and institutional capacities and knowledge in the field of agriculture.” Since the EU has approved the start of the ratification of the SAA, it is now up to the 27 member-states to individually confirm the ratification within their national parliaments before it can take full effect.
