Belgian authorities will start returning to their home countries the Serbian and Macedonian citizens who have sought political asylum in Belgium. Belgian Ambassador to Serbia Denise de Hauwere announced that the first return will be organized on Wednesday, March 10, when buses filled with people who sought political asylum in Belgium will depart for Serbia, followed by translators and members of the Belgian Immigration Service. Belgium to start returning asylum seekers Belgium will bear the costs of the journey, Hauwere told Radio Free Europe. The number of asylum seekers from Serbia at the beginning of 2010 was greater than in the entire year of 2009. In February alone, a total of 330 citizens from southern Serbia, mostly Albanians and Roma, sought political asylum in Belgium. In the first days of March, about 20 people a day requested this status. The Belgian ambassador pointed out that this is a great problem for Belgium, and added that it has been decided that the requests will be responded to with speedy procedures. There are no conditions for seeking political asylum, since Serbia is not at war, and no one has been persecuted over ethnic or religious reasons, she said, explaining that there are no conditions for obtaining economic asylum either, since it does not exist as a category.
