Belgrade reiterates Kosovo vote stance

Minister for Kosovo Goran Bogdanovic says that the conditions for Serbs in Kosovo to participate in the forthcoming elections "do not exist". Local elections have been called in the province for November 15. Belgrade reiterates Kosovo vote stance Bogdanovic made the statement during his meeting in Belgrade on Friday with Austrian Foreign Ministry Political Director Stefan Lehne. He said that Belgrade's official stance on the elections – to be organized by the Kosovo Albanian authorities – was announced "in time" by both President Boris Tadic and the government. Bogdanovic was also quoted as saying that he expects the International Court of Justice (ICJ) to rule that international law and international order was violated with the declaration of the "so-called state of Kosovo". Also on Friday, the Holy Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) sent its appeal "to the people of Kosovo and Metohija not to participate in the local elections and not to respond to calls from the authorities of the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo". "We are appealing to the faithful in Kosovo and Metohija not to respond to calls from the illegal institutions of the self-proclaimed republic of Kosovo and not to take part in the forthcoming elections in Kosovo and Metohija," said the Synod in a message, signed by Metropolitan Amfilohije, and published on Church's official website. The statement explained that the appeal came "due to violations of elementary human rights in this Serbian province, guaranteed by the UN Charter, and especially by Resolution 1244."

Bogdanović made the statement during his meeting in Belgrade on Friday with Austrian Foreign Ministry Political Director Stefan Lehne.

He said that Belgrade's official stance on the elections – to be organized by the Kosovo Albanian authorities – was announced "in time" by both President Boris Tadić and the government.
