"Koštunica shelters associates linked with organized crime"

At the beginning of June, B92 TV broadcast transcripts of phone conversations between some members of the co-called Highway Mafia, including those that were not named in the indictment issued against the group.

An attorney for the state company filed charges against B92 journalists for airing what he said was “an official secret.”

“The Prosecution must react to these transcripts, since they link certain state officials with ongoing investigations into organized crime,” the statement said.

The LDP demanded that the probe be extended to include those it called the most accountable, and to establish authenticity of the transcripts, at the same time calling on Vojislav Koštunica to step down as prime minister.

The trial of the 53 members of the highway mafia charged with abuse of office started on May 28 in Belgrade. The defendants have been accused of issuing bogus toll cards from April 2005 until May 2005, illegally collecting EUR 6.5mn in payments.
