Macedonian citizens are generally dissatisfied with the political, social and economic situation, a recent poll has shown. “Although our previous inquiries indicated increased support for, and optimism about, the country’s overall positive trends in these areas, the recent poll shows citizens have not yet felt its results”, Vladimir Bozinovski from the Institute for Democracy that conducted the poll told Balkan Insight on Monday. Poll shows Macedonians dissatisfied Questioned whether they think economic conditions in the country have improved since last year, 26 per cent of respondents answered in the affirmative, while over 36 per cent replied that they have worsened. Over 42 per cent think that the rights of those facing social problems or exclusion are less appreciated than last year, compared with 18 per cent who think the change has been the other way round. The poll also shows that over 34 per cent of people believe that there is more corruption this year, compared to 2006. Only 18 per cent say that corruption is on the decrease. “We wanted to see on a macro level if people felt the results of the government’s policies. For example, the positive trends in the Bulgarian economy that started in the 1990s took time to be reflected in public opinion surveys”, Bozinovski said. According to him, the same goes for Macedonia as the recent GDP growth and the fight against corruption need some time to bear fruit.
