The EU urgently needs to appoint a new anti-terrorism chief, Portugal's prime minister said Wednesday.

Portugal calls for EU anti-terrorism coordinator

In laying out Portugal's agenda for its six-month EU presidency, Prime Minister Jose Socrates stressed that a new coordinator must be appointed urgently and his mandate defined more clearly.

Some felt that De Vries did not have enough powers to effectively synchronize the sharing of intelligence among EU nations.

"Only European cooperation allows us to prevent and pursue terrorism," Socrates told EU lawmakers.

Socrates' call for closer cooperation in the fight against terrorism comes after failed car bomb attacks in London and Glasgow, Scotland.

"Democracy does not fear terrorism and knows how to remain firm in the face of this threat. A good example of this firm position is that of the British government," he said.

The position of the EU counterterrorism coordinator was created after the March, 11, 2004, attack on Madrid commuter trains that killed 191 people.
