Romania: head of foreign intelligence resigns

Claudiu Saftoiu, 37, formerly a journalist, resigned a few days after he told lawmakers that the Romanian Foreign Intelligence Service had the means to intercept telephone calls in Romania. By law only the domestic intelligence service can listen in to phone calls.

Saftoiu was formerly an adviser to President Traian Basescu before he was appointed to head the intelligence service in October. His wife Adriana Saftoiu is Basescu's spokeswoman and his most trusted aide.

Transcripts of Saftoiu's comments made to lawmakers in a Parliamentary committee appeared Monday in daily Adevarul. Basescu was informed of his resignation. There was no immediate word from Saftoiu.
