Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic (G17 Plus) is on an official visit to Athens Friday. Dinkic told reporters after a meeting with Greek Minister of Finances and Economy George Alogoskoufis that an agreement was reached for the Greek government to earmark some EUR 100mn next year for the construction of part of Corridor 10 in southern Serbia. The funds will come from the Hellenic Plan for the Balkans, and the protocol will be signed as Minister Alogoskoufis visits Belgrade, Dinkic specified. He also announced that the Serbian government will set aside significant funds in the 2008 budget to secure that work begins on the construction of the Corridor 10 section in southern Serbia next spring, the Ministry of Economy said in a statement. "The completion of the highway along Corridor 10 is of exceptional strategic and economic importance for the economy of Serbia, the economy of Greece, and for the entire region," Dinkic said. He pointed out that this route will link the economies of western and central Europe with the Port of Thessalonica, in that way facilitate the transport of goods. Dinkic and Alogoskoufis agreed that the economic cooperation between the two countries is "very good", but also expressed the mutual wish for further promotion. They also coordinated the future work of the respective ministries on the exchange of regulations pertaining to avoiding double taxation, the statement said. Dinkic began an official visit to Greece on Thursday. In talks with Greek Foreign Minister Dora Bakoyannis, the interest of the both countries to realization the Hellenic Plan was stressed, according to the Finance Ministry. The Greek plan for economic reconstruction of the Balkans envisages earmarking of around EUR 550mn worth of donations for the regional countries from 2002 until 2006. Serbia has been given the right to use some EUR 230mn in order to modernize the energy and transport infrastructure, state and local administration, and to develop the private sector and reduce poverty.
