The police have arrested a 24-year-odl member of the Serbska Akcija group and fund in his apartment material urging violence and hate speech against the Roma.

Man arrested in connection to anti-Roma leaflets

F.G. is a member of an informal social group called "Serb Action" and was arrested in coordination with the Belgrade Higher Prosecutor's Office, she said, adding that a laptop, usb flash drive and mobile phone had been seized in the operation.

He will be kept in police custody on suspicion of inciting national, racial and religious hatred and intolerance, she explained.

"The police are taking steps to investigate all the circumstances related to the case and have already interviewed four other persons and gained information that was passed over to the prosecutor's office for further processing," she said.

The suspect will be interviewed at the prosecutor's office she pointed out.

The anti-Roma flyers were placed in mailboxes across Belgrade and some other cities in Serbia.

The public, administration, organizations that deal with Roma issues and some political parties condemned the distribution of the flyers.

Head of the parliament committee on human and minority rights and gender equality Meho Omerovic and the National Council of the Roma Minority described the act as hate speech, fascism and extremism, while Equality Protection Commissioner Nevena Petrusic filed criminal charges.
