BELGRADE, NOVI SAD League of Social Democrats of Vojvodina (LSV) leader Nenad Canak has stated that he did not attack anyone and that he was only defending his niece. Pavle Lesanovic from Belgrade claims he was attacked and beaten by Canak and his bodyguards on Sunday morning in Novi Sad. LSV leader denies beating up man after restaurant fight “A black SUV pulled over and Canak and his two bodyguards got out. They started cursing me and saying I was a Belgrade scum and then Canak hit me across the face with his walking cane,” he stressed. He added that the two bodyguards had tackled him and beaten him up and then left. Canak said on his Facebook profile that he hoped that the truth would be proven in court and warned about statements of certain politicians regarding the incident. “I hope that the truth will be revealed in the court proceedings, although, judging by the statements of political leaders, the verdict has already been reached,” he stressed. “So much for the rule of law, presumption of innocence, protection of personal integrity and other pre-election slogans,” the LSV leader added. According to him, his niece called him to come and get her at the restaurant because Lesanovic was acting inappropriately and that she even had to ask restaurant owner, a famous Serbian water polo player, Danilo Ikodinovic to protect her. “I took my niece home, called Danilo Ikodinovic on the phone and said that we needed to talk. At a parking lot outside the restaurant I found the ‘victim’, tried to talk to him but he was visibly under the influence of alcohol and I realized that any talk would be meaningless,” Canak said and stressed that everything else was a lie. However, B92 has learnt from well-informed sources that there are indications that the LSV leader was involved in the incident. Serbian parliament Speaker Nebojsa Stefanovic has stated that he has learnt from the police that the investigation is underway and that “MP Canak more than actively participated in the incident”.
