Hague Tribunal Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz has stated that arrest of Ratko Mladic must remain a condition for Serbia’s accession into the EU. He has called upon the EU to keep exerting pressure on Belgrade authorities to arrest the Hague indictee. Chief prosecutor: Mladic condition for EU “It is important for the EU to continue with a principle of conditioning the European integration process by full cooperation (of Belgrade) with the tribunal,” Brammertz told Belgian dailies La Libre Belgique and De Standard. He pointed out that it was important to emphasize measures that led toward strengthening of stability in the Balkans but he also added that “the role of the prosecutor and the tribunal is to be the voice of the victims”. “We don’t have a lot of time. The tribunal will close in three to four years. The victims demand that the justice is served,” Brammertz explained. Serbia’s EU candidacy bid should be on the agenda of the EU foreign ministers’ meeting on October 25.
