Radovan Karadžić has told a status conference that the prosecution is trying to drag out his trial by calling a large number of witnesses.

Radovan Karadzic has told a status conference that the prosecution is trying to drag out his trial by calling a large number of witnesses. “The prosecution does not have a case against me, and they are, how can I put it, shooting at me with shotguns in the hope that something might catch me. In view of the number of witnesses being proposed, we should be working in three shifts, five days a week,” Karadzic told the trial chamber. Karadzic: Prosecutors prolonging proceedings Judge Iain Bonomy (presiding) said that it was unlikely that the case would begin before September, adding that, if necessary, the next status conference would be held on July 22. Karadzic also said that he is waiting on further information from the United Nations regarding the agreement between him and U.S. diplomat Richard Holbrooke, adding that serving Swedish Foreign Minister Carl Bildt was willing to cooperate with his defense team regarding this issue. Karadzic is defending himself in the case, with the help of an expert legal defense team. The former Bosnian Serb leader is accused of genocide and other war crimes committed in Bosnia-Herzegovina between 1992 and 1995. He was arrested in Belgrade on July 21, 2008, after more than 12 years on the run, under a secret identity. Karadzic was extradited to the Hague Tribunal on July 30.
