Court mulls Kovačević custody decision

The Belgrade District Court has abolished the decision to extend Miladin Kovacevic’s custody, court spokeswoman Ivana Ramic said. The court is expected to make a new decision to determine how long he will be in custody, she said. Court mulls Kovacevic custody decision Previously, the fear that the suspect may flee was cited as the reason for extending his detention. “After the appeal of Kovacevic’s defense, the Belgrade District Court has decided to abolish the decision and the case has been sent back for a new ruling,” Ramic said. “At this moment we can say, since the process is ongoing, that the decision was overturned because of essential violations of regulations of the criminal proceedings and the incomplete determination of the factual situation,” she said. Kovacevic has an Interpol warrant out for his arrest issued by the U.S. for charges of assault and battery. He was arrested in October for seriously injuring a fellow student at a New York state university he was attending, and for his illegal escape from America to Serbia by way of counterfeit travel documents.

Previously, the fear that the suspect may flee was cited as the reason for extending his detention.

“After the appeal of Kovačević’s defense, the Belgrade District Court has decided to abolish the decision and the case has been sent back for a new ruling,” Ramić said.

“At this moment we can say, since the process is ongoing, that the decision was overturned because of essential violations of regulations of the criminal proceedings and the incomplete determination of the factual situation,” she said.

Kovačević has an Interpol warrant out for his arrest issued by the U.S. for charges of assault and battery.
