Orie, a Dutch judge, will preside over the case, while the two other members of the bench are still unknown. The defense had asked for a postponement in order to prepare its case, but Orie said that the trial must start on time, though the defense could ask for an adjournment to better prepare its case once the trial was under way. Tieger said that it would take him some 11 months to present all the evidence for his case, adding that he expected the trial to last about two years. Gotovina led Operation Storm, while Cermak was a military captain in Knin and Markac was commander of a police unit within the Croatian military. Gotovina was arrested in 2005 in Spain having been on the run for four years, while Cermak and Markac gave themselves up to the Tribunal earlier. The trial was due to begin in May of last year, but Gotovina’s defense team asked for the other defendants’ legal counsels to be removed from the process because of a conflict of interest. The request was granted by the Tribunal.
