Red Star executives to remain in jail
9 December 2007 | 11:10 -> 12:30 | Source: B92, Beta
BELGRADE -- Three Red Star FC board members arrested Friday will be investigated and kept in detention, a spokesman says.

Tomo Zorić told reporters Saturday that the Second Belgrade Municipal Prosecution has filed a request to investigate Red Star secretary-general Zoran Damjanović, director of stadium Miodrag Ćorović, and security commissioner Novica Mijušković, along with the Serbian Football Association delegate in the Dec. 2 MSL match at Red Star stadium between the home side and Hajduk Kula, Rade Popović.

Today it emerged that the decision was made to keep the four in jail for the next 30 days and open an official investigation.

Zorić said that the prosecution suspects they are responsible for serious breaches of a law regulating prevention of violence at sports venues.

Due to this, riots took place at the stadium, leading to attacks on policeman Nebojša Trajković, who sustained life-threatening injuries in the process.

Four others, including one minor, are suspected of being the direct perpetrators of the violence against the policeman, and are also held in jail.

The prosecution said yesterday it wanted the Red Star and FA officials to remain in detention, and explained this with fears they, if freed, could influence witnesses and repeat the criminal offense.

But the Red Star board yesterday gave "full backing" to its executives, and said in a statement it believed they did everything to ensure the necessary level of security at the stadium during the game.

Police are also looking into the club's financial dealings. Some reports suggest some of the high-profile player transfers may have been conducted illegally. The statement from Red Star yesterday rejected these claims.
