Air Serbia plans to acquire regional carriers - PM

"This is a true success and victory, show me any airline in the region that can compare to Air Serbia? None can," said he.

The prime minister added that he "believes Air Serbia will in the coming period also be buying some airlines in the Balkans."

"This may be the second happy news," said Vucic, referring announced direct flights to New York as the first. Vucic said that the company is "the best airline in the Balkans, and Serbia is proud both of its success, and the partnership with Etihad."

He added that the company "will have over 2.5 million passengers, if they finish some works at the airport."

He denied the claims that the Serbian government last year allocated EUR 75 million as assistance to Air Serbia.

Vucic said the IMF "controls every penny the government spends" and that the amount of subsidies was "easy to check."

Asked how much the government did allocate to the carrier, Vucic replied:

"Much less than what some others have said, and we would have given much more had it been needed."
