Serbian officials start talks with IMF delegation

The IMF delegation will stay in Belgrade until November 20 and conduct consultations related to Article IV of the IMF Statute and discuss an economic program that would be supported by a new arrangement with the IMF.

The consultations on Article IV of the IMF Statute have to be conducted with all members of the IMF once a year.

The previous consultations with Serbia were held in May 2013.

The talks with the IMF will include the macroeconomic situation in the country and the goals and measures of the Serbian government's economic policy in the future, which should form the base for a new arrangement with the IMF.

Speaking on Tuesday, Minister Vujović said that the number of public sector employees to be laid off "has not yet been defined," and that this will be done "in line with a special law, and natural outflow."

Ahead of the talks with the IMF delegation today, he told reporters he "had no idea where the figure of 95,000 people to be sacked in the next three years, heard in public, came from."

He added that "contours, content, and some agreements were finished already in Washington," while "elaboration and later implementation" will be "the hardest part."

"As we announced, subsidies will be cut, and gas transit fees raised. Public companies are an enormous topic and that is the second pillar where huge savings are expected. For the first time we have a very detailed database based on which we will look at a snapshot of public companies together with the Fund and the World Bank and negotiate structural loans that will support restructuring of public companies," Vujović was quoted as saying.

According to him, a special World Bank loan will cover severance pay to those to be laid off.

The Serbian government expects to reach an agreement with the IMF by December 25.
