National Bank of Serbia (NBS) Governor Dejan Soskic says that a new arrangement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) should be seriously discussed. He added that such an arrangement would not entail additional indebtedness of the country but rather be made out of precaution. NBS governor on new IMF arrangement Soskic told Tanjug that it would be very useful if the talks on the last revision of the stand-by arrangement with the IMF, which will officially start on Sunday, would include serious discussion about the opening of a new arrangement. “I believe that it would be very important for the revival of the European economy and the economy of the regional countries to seriously discuss the possibility of making of a new arrangement with the IMF, which does not necessarily implies additional indebtedness of the country,” he underlined. “I believe that we should not take any further loans, but rather open a credit line with the IMF in case of changes and instabilities in the international financial environment,” the NBS governor explained. He stated that such an arrangement should last for two years, since in the period the economic situation in the eurozone, which was the most important for Serbia, would probably stabilize, while at the same time structural reforms in our country might be launched following the beginning of the mandate of a new government.
