The use of EU funds in the pre-accession period will enable the Serbian farmers to increase their competitiveness. They will also improve production and boost earnings, Serbian Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Sasa Dragin stated on Tuesday. EU funds for Serbian agriculture After obtaining the candidate status, Serbia will be able to take out over EUR 50 million annually from the EU funds, Dragin underscored at the opening of the conference on the strengthening of Serbia's capacities for the use of EU funds in the area of rural development in the pre-accession period. Dragin stressed that in 2009, Serbia began intensive preparations for the establishment of administrative structures necessary for the use of the fifth component of Instrument for Pre-Accession Assistance (IPA) funds allocated for rural development. Representative of the EU Delegation to Serbia Andrew Headey said that, from 2000-2009, the EU invested a total of EUR 72 million in Serbia's agriculture - EUR 42 million from 2000-2006 and another EUR 30 million from 2007-2009. Headey also said that, according to the experience of other countries, the preparation period for the use of the EU pre-accession funds lasts from two to four years.
